Dr. Janet Phillips serves as Assistant Professor of Music, Director of Bands, and administrator of the Growing Up Musically early childhood music education initiative at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. She began the first-ever Averett University Band program in Fall 2015. In its third year now, the group has grown to 34 members. In addition to her work at Averett, Janet maintains an active flute performance, conducting, and private teaching schedule. She performs with the group Define Jazz and spends two weeks each summer teaching and performing at UNCG Summer Music Camp.
Dr. Phillips completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2015. During her doctoral studies, she was a flute student of Dr. Deborah Egekvist and a conducting student of Dr. John R. Locke. While at UNCG, she performed principal and key leadership roles in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, chamber ensembles including Casella Sinfonietta and Present Continuous, as well as numerous Opera Orchestras. She taught private lessons for the UNCG Flute Studio and was the conductor of the UNCG Flute Ensemble. Janet was the bass flute soloist on the world premiere and studio recording of The Frozen Cathedral composed by John Mackey, which reached #1 on iTunes classical downloads shortly after its release. She can be heard as principal flutist on the UNCG Wind Ensemble CD Stories and Sanctuaries. Since 2012, Janet has been a member of the teaching staff of the UNCG Summer Music Camp, America’s Most Popular!
Prior to her graduate work, Janet was a charter member of the Danville Symphony Orchestra, was Principal Flutist for 20 years, and served several terms on the Symphony's Board of Directors. She previously taught band at Woodlawn Academy and private lessons on numerous woodwind instruments at Chatham Hall while maintaining a private teaching studio and active performance schedule. Originally from Gretna, Virginia, Janet earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida and Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from UNC Greensboro.
